Thailand on Alert as Tropical Storm Wipha Brings Heavy Rain and Flood Warnings

by ZOSMA

Thailand’s weather agency has issued a nationwide warning as Tropical Storm Wipha, which made landfall in southern China last night, pushes heavy rain and strong winds toward the kingdom. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) says intense downpours are expected throughout today, with several areas facing flash flood risks and dangerous sea conditions.

The warning covers all regions, but Bangkok and nearby provinces are likely to see widespread thunderstorms. Northern, northeastern, eastern, and western southern regions are also in line for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Provinces such as Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Chanthaburi, Trat, and Ranong are on high alert as officials brace for possible flash floods and runoff in low-lying communities.

Sea conditions have also become hazardous. Waves in the upper Andaman Sea could reach two to four meters, and parts of the Gulf of Thailand may see swells topping three meters during storms. Ferry operators in Koh Samui, Phuket, and other tourist destinations are monitoring conditions closely, while authorities urge travelers to confirm schedules before heading to ports.

Although Wipha won’t hit Thailand directly, its interaction with the southwest monsoon is fueling the surge in rainfall. The storm has already crossed into southern China’s Guangdong province and is moving toward the Gulf of Tonkin, but its influence will persist for days. Water management agencies are on standby to prevent flooding in urban areas, especially Bangkok, where sudden downpours often overwhelm drainage systems.

Forecasters warn that unsettled weather could linger through the middle of the week. Residents in flood-prone zones are advised to stay alert, monitor official updates, and prepare for possible power outages and travel disruptions. With storm clouds thickening over the capital and along the coast, all eyes are on how Thailand weathers the days ahead.
